Gender, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation

Your response to those who believe that early childhood centers should avoid the inclusion of books depicting gay or lesbian individuals such as same-sex partnered families.
When it comes to the topic of inclusion of books depicting gay or lesbian individuals such as same-sex partnered families, I am torn about the subject. The parent side of me would like to talk to my own child about gay or lesbian individuals. I do not believe that it is up to the school to teach my child about this topic. I believe that learn starts at home and we should not depend on teachers to teach our child everything. Gay or lesbian individuals can be a touchy topic that most people are not ready to introduce to their child yet. Being a professional I know that there are children whom have same sex parents and other children observe that and ask questions. By having books to help the teaches assist with the subject can be very influential.
How you would respond to a parent/family member who informed you they did not want anyone who is perceived (or self-reported) homosexual or transgender to be caring for, educating, and/or interacting with their child.
If a parent/family member informed me they did not want anyone who is perceived (or self-reported) homosexual or transgender to be caring for, educating, and/or interacting with their child, I would explain to them that that teachers personal life has nothing to do with them as a professional. I give them facts about how good of a teacher the individual is and how our program has a nondiscrimination policy. I would give the parent the option to change their child’s room but that would be all that I can offer.

  1. Hi there,
I completely agree with both of the answers you provided. I think that it is a touchy subject. I know if I had children going to a childcare center, I would want to be the one who introduced my children to a different family style and not someone else doing it. I want to raise my children to tolerate and accept, but to also hold strong to their personal beliefs and values and there is a very tricky way of handling these controversial subjects. In addition and in regards to the lesbian or gay childcare worker, I would offer the option to leave rooms as well, but also explain that we cannot discriminate people when we hire them. It is important for them to know where a facility stands on issues like that. I think it also says a lot for a center to respect and support its workers.

  2. Hi Brittany,
I too am divided in the topic of gay/lesbian books being included in the early childhood classroom. I agree that this is not a subject that an educator should have to introduce to a child. I can understand having them as reference materials, if needed due to family or families of the child or children of the class (Laureate Education Inc.,n.d).
Thank you for sharing your insight :)!

This is a topic that most education fear of teaching children. I feel that this is a job for the parent too explain to their child when they are ready. But as we know that society is change and in order to keep up with society we have to make this known to the children. I think that having book in the class will help some. Books depicting heterosexual families, simply capture everyday family life experiences that involving children, pets family outing and celebrations, and family that enjoy each other company. Having the book in the classroom children from all types of families can develop their understanding and appreciation of the commonalities in loving relationships and home. Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi Brittany, I understand your concerns about have materials in your classroom, having Christian faith can also course doubt about such materials being placed in the classroom. Having parents opinion on this topic can also be a touch situation, because some might as well as some parents might not. But providing this information can also help students to understand certain lifestyles making them aware and more knowledge about life.
