Sharing Web Resources

We were asked to pick a website to focus on throughout the remainder of the course. The website that I took interest in is The National Black Child Development Institute, nbcdi.org. The reason I took interest in this website is because I never knew about any national all black institution for early childhood. This organization is focused on the education, care, and health of black children and their families. They "serve as a national resource agency providing programs, publications, advocacy and training's related to early childhood care and education; K-12 education; health and wellness; literacy; family engagement; and child welfare"(nbcdi.org).

One thing in the in the news section that caught my attention is The Voice of America media segment. In this media piece the NBCDI President and CEO Tobeka Green speaks about the  book vending machine project in Southeast Washington, D.C. This is a project where books are put in vending machines and the children can get them for free and they get to keep the books. The program is sponsored by Jetblue airlines. So far there are only three vending machines and they are located in the poor neighborhoods where the literacy levels are low.

  1. Hi Brittany,

I enjoyed reading your post. I was never aware of any national all black institution for early childhood. That is a great resource you shared within the website. Working in a low income neighborhood I often find there is little availability of books in the home. Despite efforts to promote literacy development such as parent workshops and lending libraries, it is still a challenge to promote literacy in the home. I think that is a wonderful idea to give children an opportunity to have books in the home. Thank you for sharing such a great resource.

  2. Hello Brittany,
There is so much available on the internet we could easily spend all day just investigating all that the web has to offer. I didn't know there was a national all black institution for early childhood site available either. Good to know. Thank you for sharing this information with us. What a great project Jet Blue has going for help promote literacy. I will be sure to visit the site and check it out.

    Thank You, Tana Isenhour
